UPSC IES 2022 – Selection Process
There are three stages in the UPSC IES/ESE Recruitment exam:
- Stage 1 (IES Preliminary exam): It consists of two objective papers with a total of 500 marks. You need to clear the overall cutoff and cutoff of both papers separately in order to clear the prelims.
- Stage 2 (IES Mains Exam): It includes two descriptive papers of 300 marks each.
- Stage 3 (Interview): The final stage of the IES 2022 exam involves a Personal Interview or Personality Test. It carries 200 marks.

IES Exam 2022 Marking Scheme:
The provision for negative marking is only in IES Prelims Exam. Candidate must know the following negative marking scheme:
- If a candidate gives any wrong answer then 1/3 marks will be deducted from the total marks.
- A penalty will be imposed on the candidate who gives any extra answer for a particular question.
- If the answer will be left blank then no extra marks will be deducted.
IES Mains Exam Pattern 2022 (Stage 2)
The UPSC IES Main Examination is conducted in offline mode i.e. it is a written examination.
- IES Stage 2 will have 02 papers. Both the papers will consist of questions from the Engineering discipline (Civil Engineering/ Mechanical Engineering/ Electrical/ Electronics & Telecommunication Engineering) opted by the candidate.
- You need to attempt only 05 questions out of a total of 08 questions.
- You need to answer in the English language only.
- NO negative marking in the Main exam.
- However, Up to 5% marks may be deducted in case of illegible handwriting.
- Credit will be given for exact, to-the-point answers using an economy of words.

IES Personal Interview (Stage 3):
Candidates who get shortlisted through both the stages of the written test then will be called for Personality Test/ Interview. The final selection of the candidate is based on Personal Interview performance. Both the stages of recruitment are qualifying in nature. Stage 3 of the assessment carries a total of 200 marks.
In the IES Interview round, the following skills of the candidates are assessed:

- Initiative & Intellectual Curiosity
- Suitability of candidate for a career in the public service sector
- Mental caliber or Mental alertness
- Mental & Physical energy

IES Examination Instructions:
- Language to attempt question paper is only English Language.
- Candidates should write neat and clean as 5% marks will be deducted from total marks if handwriting is not clearly visible.
- The candidate must answer on a descriptive basis.
- Objective Type papers can be evaluated but in the case of Conventional Type papers then it will be done only for those who will obtain minimum qualifying marks in Objective Type papers, as per stipulated by the Commission.
