UPSC IAS Exam Pattern for Prelims
The UPSC prelims exam consists of two papers – Paper – I (General Studies) and Paper-II (Aptitude Test). Both papers are objective-type multiple-choice questions exams. The candidates who clear this stage will be considered for the next stage, which will be the main examination. Marking Scheme for UPSC IAS Prelims Exam 2022:
- The Preliminary Exam consists of two papers – General Studies and Aptitude Test.
- Each paper will be 200 marks in weightage.
- In the paper – I (General Studies), each question carries 2 marks.
- In paper – II (Aptitude Test), each question carries 2.5 marks.
- The time duration for both papers is 02 hours.
- The question paper will be set in the English language.
- Paper II will be qualifying in nature and you need to score a minimum of 33% to qualify for the next stage of the examination.
Negative Marking Scheme in IAS Prelims Exam:
- There will be a negative marking of ⅓ marks for each wrong answer.
- If a candidate gives more than one answer, it will be treated as wrong even if one of the given answers is correct. The penalty will be the same as above.
- There will not be any negative marking for unanswered questions.

UPSC IAS Mains 2022 – Key Points:
- IAS Mains is also an offline exam. Each paper will carry 250 marks.
- Each paper is of 3 hours. 30 minutes are given extra to blind students.
- The exam will contain 7 papers.
- A candidate will be tested on the basis of their knowledge and understanding of the subject
- Questions will be both- objective and subjective in nature.
- They will be given in both Hindi and English language.
- IAS Mains is further divided into two types – Qualifying Exam and Merit Exam.
- It is compulsory to appear in both.
Marking Scheme for UPSC IAS Mains Exam:
- There will be a negative marking of ⅓ marks for each wrong answer.
- For 03 three wrong answered questions, 1 mark will be deducted.
- There will not be any negative marking for unanswered questions.

Ans. The UPSC IAS exam is conducted in 03 stages – Prelims, Mains and Personality Test.
Ques2. What are the total marks for UPSC prelims exam?
Ans. The UPSC prelims exam carries a total of 400 marks, wherein, two papers are conducted, each for 200 marks. Both papers are objective in nature.
Ques3. What is the weightage for UPSC CSE Mains?
Ans. The Mains examination of UPSC CSE has a total weightage of 1750 marks. Furthermore, a maximum of 275 marks can be added to its tally after the Personality Test.
Ques4. What educational qualification is required for UPSC Civil Service exam?
Ans. A bachelor’s degree from any recognized university is essential for appearing in the UPSC CSE exam. However, final-year students are also eligible to apply.
Ques5. What is the age limit for UPSC?
Ans. General category candidates must have attained the age of 21 years but should not be above 32 years of age to apply for the UPSC exam. However, relaxation in the upper age limit shall be provided to the reserved categories as per norms.
Ques6. Is 1 year enough for IAS preparation?
Ans. Yes, 01 year is sufficient for IAS preparation. You need to study at least 6 to 8 hours per day during exam preparation.
